India rises past the US to become the internet's second biggest user
There's only one set of presentation slides I look forward to every year, and that's Mary Meeker's annual Internet Trends report. In 2016, the highlight picked out by Meeker, partner at venture capital firm KPCB, is India's accelerating growth of user numbers in an otherwise decelerating market. She notes that, at 277 million, India's connected population is now greater than that of the United States and second only to China. This has come off the back of 40 percent growth over the past year, during which time the rest of the world has only inched up by 7 percent. India is now so big, in fact, that just by itself it adds 2 percentage points to the world's internet user growth. |
Google Report Predicts 175 Mln Online Shoppers & $20 Bln Ecommerce GMV by 2020; Discounts Not a Factor For Indians
In March this year, Indian Govt. introduced new FDI policy for online marketplaces which prohibited them from influencing customers via discounts. Portals like Flipkart and Amazon found themselves on a back foot, as they were luring e-shoppers with special shopping festivals and exclusive sales as price is the biggest USP when it comes to offline vs online retail. But it seems, that eventually, discounts won’t hamper the growth of ecommerce in India. |

iPhone SE review: Apple is more clever than you thought
Apple's latest innovation iPhone SE may not be worth queuing up for. Also, it is exactly not the first iPhone for price conscious consumers in India. But before you call Apple stupid for pricing the smaller SE more than iPhone 6 and almost at par with 6S, note that this iPhone may not be targeted at you. The Cupertino-based tech giant has already acknowledged that smartphones with big screens are the future. But what happens to those who are unwilling to give up the comfort of using smaller but powerful phones? There is hardly any smaller, 'comfortable' and powerful option available, of late. So, this is Apple's reply. |
Microsoft adds QR codes to the Windows 10 Blue Screen of Death
Microsoft is adding QR codes to its Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). It's the biggest change to the BSOD since the software maker removed a lot of crash details in Windows 8 and replaced them with a frowning face. The new QR codes are featured in the latest preview of Windows 10, which will debut this summer as the Anniversary Update. Microsoft is using the QR codes to help support technicians identify error codes in the blue screens, and for Windows 10 users to quickly scan them from a phone to find support articles and assistance. BSOD's have often been complicated to understand, and at times difficult to use to identify the root cause of an issue, but this simplified approach could help Windows 10 users troubleshoot any system issues. Steve Ballmer would be proud. |
HTC 10 is here with a beautiful body and powerful brains
If there’s a company that needs a winner right now, it’s HTC. Remaining competitive hasn’t been so easy for the Taiwanese company as Samsung and LG are among those who started implementing the impressive and premium designs that once made HTC special. When the One M7 and One M8 arrived, the world was mesmerized because they broke away from cheap plastic with their metal unibodies. Then the One M9 came along and underwhelmed because the HTC’s competitors were also pushing their respective engineering teams, and the specifications had nothing on the Galaxy S6 and G4.This morning, HTC announced its new flagship for 2016. The HTC 10 raises the bar with its design and beefs up its brains with top-notch specifications. It may look familiar, but the HTC 10 is unlike anything you’ve ever seen from HTC. |

iPhone SE gets lukewarm response in India on its launch
Apple's iPhone SE may have already flopped in India. The Friday launch of the company's latest device had the weakest demand for a new iPhone on day one, with barely 2,000 units made available in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, the company's leading trade partners said. With poor pre-bookings, distributors rolled out cashback offers on credit card purchases from the very first day. Demand for the iPhone SE is poor because of the steep pricing in India and its four-inch screen, which has little acceptance in India, four senior trade executives said. The device in India costs Rs 39,000 for the 16 GB model and Rs 49,000 for the 64 GB model, 40% more expensive than in the US. |

Live in a Yellow submarine on Google Maps
Google wants to help you remodel your house one sticker at a time. Okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but the search giant is adding options to customize locations (including your abode and where you work) within Google Maps by adding a whimsical icon to it. You can totally tell people you work in a lighthouse, pirate ship or a even live in yellow submarine, so long as you don't mind sharing it with a few musical insects, that is. What's more, you can add labels to just about any destination now so can get push notifications about what traffic and travel time will be like to, say, the grocery store during rush hour. However, based on what Google says, it sounds like you can only apply stickers to where you earn and bake your bread -- nowhere else. Folks with iOS devices will have to wait for this because it's only available for Android users at the moment. |

Whatsapp : Now format your text as Bold or Italic in conversation and also shows names in bold for Notifications
First, you can now format text inside WhatsApp messages as bold or italics. Just put the bold text *between asterisks* and the italics _between underscores_ and you should see the formatting on your device. This is the same formatting used by Google+ by the way. Whether the recipient sees it depends on which version of the app they're running (2.12.510 can't, but 2.12.535 can). We tried to trigger strikethrough with the text -between dashes- but that didn't work, and other symbols don't seem to cause any other formatting changes. Talking of formatting changes, notifications now show the name of the sender in bold. That's much easier to read when you're trying to parse different messages and see who's talking to you before opening the app. The notification also seems to handle the same formatting that's displayed in chats — as you can see in the screenshot above, the second "toto" is shown in bold. |

My Shake : An app that will help to warn of Earthquakes
The free MyShake app, available for Androidin the Google Play Store as of last month, is not an app to make you a milkshake, but a chance to help the University of California, Berkley, to develop an app that will give you warnings of impending earthquakes. Most of the current systems give information of tragedies after they occur, but MyShake will attempt to forewarn. The app will tap into your smartphone's accelerometer to record the shaking ground from an earthquake in an effort to create a “worldwide seismic detection network,” capable of warning the app users of nearby, impending earthquakes. It will run in the background and as it collects information to be analyzed and if it fits the profile of a quake, it will forward it to the Berkley Seismological Laboratory for further analysis. They claim it will use minimum resources on your device. |

Instagram to implement an algorithm which will showcase photos out of order
Instagram is overhauling its feed with a new personalized algorithm that means, in theory, that users will be subjected to fewer boring sunsets from random acquaintances, and more critical updates from celebrities (and close friends and family.) The move announced on Tuesday follows in the footsteps of Facebook and Twitter and moves away from the traditional organization of posts in chronological order. Instead of having the most recent photos appear at the top of a feed, the app will prioritize photos based on a user's interests, friends and other data. “To improve your experience, your feed will soon be ordered to show the moments we believe you will care about the most,” the company said in a blogpost unveiling the new system, which marks a significant change in how the site tracks user trends. “As we begin, we're focusing on optimizing the order.” |

OnePlus Gallery has just been launched. They tout is as a “no-nonsense app” that is “perfect for everyday browsing, editing and organizing”. Is all of this true? An answer to that question would require a full review, but we can certainly tell you the app looks pretty good so far. For starters, OnePlus Gallery has no annoying ads, nor does it come with bells and whistles. It is simple and clean. And because it's also optimized for offline usage, you won't be needing a connection to use it. Of course, this could also mean it will lack the cloud solutions many of us have grown to love so much. |

The best part is, it won’t take up much space on your device. Google used around 2,000 hours anonymized Google voice search traffic. This totaled over 100 million utterances. They also used YouTube to imitate real-life speaking conditions. All this to train the new system that they are working on right now. |
